PSAT 8/9 – An Important First Step on Child’s Journey to College

On Wednesday, October 10, eighth grade students enrolled in Algebra I and/or 9th Literature/Composition will take the PSAT 8/9. This test is being provided for your child by our school system to provide a jumpstart in preparing for college.

The PSAT 8/9 will give your child information on his or her strengths as well as areas that need improvement in preparing to be ready for college. After the test, your child can strengthen skills and knowledge with free personalized SAT practice using Khan Academy by utilizing the information that will be provided on the score report.

If a student takes advantage of the information provided by the PSAT 8/9 score report, utilizes the practice provided by Khan Academy, and measures growth by taking the PSAT 10 during the sophomore year followed by continued practice, the likelihood of earning a high score on the PSAT/NMSQT made available in October of the junior year is tremendously increased. The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program and can lead to numerous scholarship and college admission opportunities for your child.

Testing accommodations for the PSAT 8 will not be provided so that the students can experience the test as it will likely be taken in high school. Accommodations for the PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, and AP exams must be approved by the College Board. The PSAT 8/9 will provide useful baseline data and will not impact your child’s academic standing – the purpose is to assist your child in preparing to reach college goals. Score reports will be available in late December or early January. Students will receive instructions on how to interpret their score reports.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or your child’s principal.

With best regards,
